There are many ways to practice hurricane safety and prepare for one. Below is a list of some very easy things you can do to be prepared the next time a hurricane or serious storm threatens your home or business.
- Make sure you have a disaster plan and supply kit.
- Buy a NOAA Weather Radio and keep it in your home or business. Also, make sure it has a tone alert feature.
- Build or find a Safe-Room in your home or business

How to Respond - Evacuate or Stay?
It can be tough to decide what you should do in a situation like a hurricane. Your best bet is to listen to your local weather radio station, and officials, to see if they are urging people to stay or evacuate. Whatever you decide to do though, follow these steps. Evacuation: If decide to evacuate, there a several steps you should follow.
- Assemble your disaster supply kit
- Make sure you have a place to go
- Try to notify friends or family of your plans
- Fill your car with gas
- Bring extra cash
- If you have a pet, complete the plan you have to keep it safe, and if you don't have a plan for your pet then you need to make one
- Bring important documents with you
- Before you leave, secure your home
- Bring books, toys and games to keep entertained
- Bring pillows and blankets
- Map out your exit route
- Arrive safely at your destination!
Stay at Home: Now if you choose to stay at your home or business and weather the storm, then here is a plan you should follow.
- Assemble your disaster supply kit
- If you have a pet, complete the plan you have to keep it safe, and if you don't have a plan for your pet then you need to make one
- Stock some extra supplies
- Secure your home
- Fill your vehicle with gas
- Get some extra spending cash
- Check on your neighbors!
