In fact for nine straight days she had steady wind speeds of at least 115 miles per hour. When the storm became a tropical depression, and when it dissipated, Donna followed along the path of the Atlantic all the way from August 29 th , to September fourteenth. The storm first hit South Florida land in Marathon , in the middle of the Florida Keys . When it did, Donna was a Category 4 hurricane with maximum wind speeds of 140 miles per hour, and with a minimum central pressure of 930 mbar. Also, a storm surge that was estimated to be thirteen feet high was spotted in the ocean. On September 10 th , after striking the Florida Keys and hitting land near Fort Meyers , Donna did not take the usual path that hurricanes of her size take. After Hurricane Donna did cross the peninsula, it actually moved back out towards the Atlantic Ocean , close to Daytona Beach.
Then she headed up the East Coast and made landfall again on Topsail Beach in North Carolina. Donna finished her long journey by going into New England , and a final landfall was made in Long Island , New York. Unlike Hurricane Charlie in 2004, Hurricane Donna moved very slowly and in awkward directions. She even dumped 10 to twelve inches of rain on the southern half of Florida , and 7 inches in northern Florida. What made matters worst though, is the fact that Donna caused a surplus of rain from six to seven inches before she even hit land. This made the storm all the harder to weather as problems of flooding were already occurring. Click Here for a Free Estimate on Hurricane Shutters for your South Florida Home or Business! |
